What causes infertility?

Up to 1 in 6 Singaporean couples can experience difficulties when starting a family—There are many causes of infertility, which can involve both men and women, such as:

  • Age: Female fertility declines drastically after the age of 35. Sperm quality in men also decreases with age, although less dramatically.
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Women with this hormonal disorder experience irregular ovulation, leading to difficulty conceiving.
  • Endometriosis: In women, tissue similar to the lining of the uterus can grow outside the uterus, causing pain and interfering with fertility.
  • Low Sperm Count or Quality: Men can have low sperm count, low motility (movement), or abnormal sperm shape.
  • Blocked Fallopian Tubes: This prevents sperm from reaching the egg, and can be caused by pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or other conditions.
  • Thyroid Disorders: An unhealthy thyroid can interfere with menstrual cycles and fertility in women.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Poor lifestyle habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and stress can affect fertility in both genders.
  • Extreme Body Weight: Being obese or underweight can disrupt hormonal balance and overall fertility.
  • Environmental Factors: Exposure to environmental toxins or chemicals can disrupt fertility in men and women.
  • Genetic Conditions: Conditions like cystic fibrosis in men, for example, can affect the reproductive system.

In 40% of couples, infertility is linked to male factors, while in another 40%, the issue lies within the female reproductive system. In a third of cases, infertility is caused by a combination of both male and female factors.

Boosting your fertility naturally

Lifestyle changes can significantly influence our fertility. By adopting healthy habits, you’ll naturally enhance your chances of conception and overall reproductive health.

Here are a few tips:

1

Understand your fertile window

  • Track Ovulation: Identify your most fertile days by monitoring ovulation signs or using ovulation predictor kits.
  • Timing Intercourse: Engage in intercourse one or two days before ovulation and continue regular intercourse.

2

Maintain a healthy lifestyle

  • Quit Smoking: Smoking impacts fertility in a myriad of ways.
  • Exercise Regularly: Moderate exercise can improve fertility by helping to maintain a healthy weight, balance hormones, and reduce stress.
  • Limit Alcohol and Caffeine: Drinking regularly (3-6 drinks) during the week can lower your fertility; limit your consumption of alcohol and caffeine.

3

Improve your diet

  • Balanced Nutrition: Both partners should eat healthy foods and maintain a healthy weight when trying to conceive.
  • Folic Acid: Women should take 400mcg of folic acid and multivitamins for general health.
  • Antioxidant-Rich Foods: Incorporate fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to support reproductive health.

4

Manage stress

  • Relaxation Techniques: To reduce stress, practice yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises.
  • Adequate Sleep: Ensure 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to support hormonal balance.

5

Avoid environmental toxins

  • Limit Exposure: Reduce contact with harmful chemicals, pesticides, and pollutants.
  • Safe Products: Choose personal care and household products with natural ingredients.

Our health coaches are here to guide you through these lifestyle changes and more, ensuring you make the proper adjustments needed to enhance your fertility and support your dreams of starting a family.

Common fertility treatments

Based on your fertility test results, your doctor will recommend the best holistic approach for you and your partner.

Common medical fertility treatments include:

  • IUI (Intrauterine Insemination): Semen is inserted into the uterus close to ovulation to increase the chances of fertilisation.
  • IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation): Eggs are retrieved from the ovaries, fertilised in a lab, and transferred back into the uterus.

Your comprehensive treatment plan will likely involve lifestyle changes, timed intercourse, or addressing underlying health conditions as per your doctor’s recommendations.

FAQ

What is a fertility screening?

A fertility assessment is a series of tests and consultations to evaluate your reproductive health and identify any issues affecting fertility.

The assessment typically takes 1-2 appointments, depending on the tests required for both partners.

For women, tests may include blood tests, ultrasound scans, and hormonal evaluations to check for ovulation, ovarian reserve, and reproductive health.

For men, a semen analysis is the primary test to evaluate sperm count, motility, and morphology.

Consider a fertility examination if you’ve been trying to conceive for a year or more unsuccessfully (or 6 months if you’re over 35)

Most fertility tests are noninvasive and minimally uncomfortable, such as blood draws or ultrasounds.

Yes, a fertility assessment can help identify underlying conditions affecting fertility, whether related to the male or female reproductive system.

No, you can usually schedule a fertility examination directly with a fertility clinic without a referral.

Once the results are reviewed and discussed, you can begin fertility treatments as soon as both you and your doctor are ready.

Infertility in couples is the inability to conceive after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse. In women aged 35 and older, infertility is typically diagnosed after 6 months of trying without success.

Remember, infertility is often not an irreversible destiny but a challenge to be navigated with the proper guidance and care.

Jodie has been such a great help in my health journey! She really took the time to help me understand my body and gave super practical tips that actually fit into my daily routine. I learned so much about portion control, and I love how she explained how nutrition and exercise can be adjusted around the menstrual cycle — it made everything click for me. She’s knowledgeable, approachable, and easy to talk to. I feel a lot more confident now about making choices that work for me. Highly recommend her!

Prologue Wellness takes a truly holistic approach to weight management and well-being. Instead of quick fixes, they focus on educating clients about proper nutrition, helping us build sustainable habits that improve both health and quality of life.

I also love their Clinical Core & Flow programme, which combines physiotherapy, Pilates, and yoga. It creates a supportive environment for women of all fitness levels.

On top of that, they offer innovative non-invasive treatments like Exion Body, Vanquish Me, and EmBody. These complement their holistic programmes perfectly by supporting body contouring, fat reduction, and muscle strengthening in a safe, effective way.

The team, especially Jodie, Shonia and Serene, are professional, caring, and genuinely invested in their clients’ well-being. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a place that integrates science, movement, and holistic care.

The struggles of postpartum recovery are real, and I’m so thankful to have found Prologue, a women’s wellness centre that truly understands and supports mothers like me.

Like many postpartum mums, I’ve been dealing with diastasis recti, a bulging tummy that makes me look pregnant, urinary incontinence that limits my activity with my kids, and difficulty losing pregnancy weight due to stress eating and late nights.

Since starting my personalised treatment plan here, I’ve seen real improvements. Weekly sessions with my nutritionist, Jodie, have helped me eat in a balanced and sustainable way. Physiotherapy sessions with Chloe and Jodie have strengthened my core and pelvic floor, while the Emsella chair has improved my incontinence. Embody treatments are helping with my DR, shockwave therapy is reducing bloating and stretch marks, and Exion Body treatments are tightening loose skin.

I’m truly grateful for the professional, encouraging, and caring team at Prologue who have supported me every step of the way. Highly recommended to any postpartum mother looking to recover, rebuild, and regain confidence.

Would highly highly recommend this place to postpartum ladies. Other than the many machine services to help with various issues such as DR, weak pelvic floor muscles and loose skin, they also have trained nutritionist and physiotherapist to help provide a holistic recovery experience! Truly glad that Proloque team has helped to resolved my DR and I have seen improvements in my core and pelvic floor muscles! Lastly, the space here is nicely done up and the team of ladies here are very friendly and professional.
